Palavras ‘alms’, ‘alumnus’ e ‘assist’

Palavras chamadas ‘false cognates’ ou ‘false friends’ indicam palavras que têm sua escrita parecida com as do português, porém significados diferentes. Comento aqui sobre as palavras ‘alms’, ‘alumnus’ e ‘assist’. ‘Alms’ significa alimentação, roupa ou dinheiro que se doa a pessoas pobres, esmola; para ‘almas’ devemos dizer ‘souls’. ‘Alumnus’ significa estudante egresso, ex-aluno, alguém já formado; para ‘aluno’, recomenda-se dizer ‘student’, ‘pupil’. ‘Assist’ significa ajudar, auxiliar; para ‘assistir a’ no sentido de ver e olhar devemos dizer ‘watch’.

Observe os exemplos seguintes:
+ I usually give ALMS to the poor.
(Eu geralmente dou esmolas aos pobres.).
+ As an ALUMNUS, he said it was hard to finish his degree.
(Como ex-aluno, ele disse que foi difícil terminar seu curso.).
+ We ASSIST old people in their basic needs.
(Nós auxiliamos pessoas idosas em suas necessidades.).
